Today, regional drinking water shortage being experienced in Turkey. rainfall in Turkey shows regional and seasonal differences. In these regions where surface water sources such as dams, lakes and rivers are lacking or having insufficient spring water, alternative solutions should be taken.

In these regions where surface water sources such as dams, lakes and rivers are lacking or having insufficient spring water, alternative solutions should be taken. These solutions are to carry water from clean water sources by tanker, to bring water from other regions by laying kilometers of pipelines, or to treat existing water resources with appropriate methods. Among these alternatives, the most advantageous one is to provide drinking and utility water by treating groundwater or sea sense, if it is a region close to the sea, by using existing resources.
It is not possible to purify these water resources with high salinity by conventional methods. More advanced treatment methods are required to purify these waters. These methods are evaporation, ion exchange, reverse electrodialysis and membrane processes. Among these methods, membrane processes are the most preferred. Reverse osmosis systems are the most sensitive membrane filtration method known. Membrane filtration methods retain the majority of dissolved organic and inorganic substances as well as solids. Membrane filtration is listed as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis depending on the pressure increase applied.
In our country, membrane processes are mainly used to provide high quality water to the industry. Re-use of treated water in alternative water resources has become very important in the world in recent years. The reverse osmosis method is widely used, especially in the iron and steel industry, coating industry and textile industry. Reverse osmosis method is used to obtain more concentrated products in the fruit juice and tomato paste industry.
